“I thoroughly enjoyed the Death Valley Workshop and got more photos that I like than from any previous workshops. Thanks for a great workshop. I’m looking forward to more of them!” –Randy A., twelve-time repeat client
At first glance, the largest National Park in the Lower 48 United States appears to be nothing more than a stark and desolate wasteland, sculpted by sun, wind, and geologic time in the rain shadow of the High Sierra and the Panamint Range. Yet for those willing to slow down and look carefully, Death Valley reveals itself as a place of extraordinary subtlety and elegance — a landscape of luminous dunes, intricate salt formations, sinuous canyon walls, vast open silence, and ever-changing desert light.
Visionary Wild invites you to experience this remarkable landscape during an immersive five-day luxury landscape photography retreat based at the historic The Inn at Death Valley, one of the most iconic desert resorts in the American West. Surrounded by palms, gardens, spring-fed pools, and sweeping desert vistas, the Inn offers an oasis of comfort and refinement in the heart of one of the world’s most visually compelling landscapes. After sunrise shoots in the dunes and evenings beneath glowing mountain skies, participants will return to beautifully appointed accommodations, exceptional dining, and the restorative atmosphere that has drawn travelers to Death Valley for nearly a century.
This workshop will be led by master photographers Jerry Dodrill and Todd Pickering, both of whom have photographed Death Valley extensively and know its changing moods, hidden corners, and best light intimately. Throughout the workshop, Jerry and Todd will share their personal approaches to composition, visual storytelling, light, atmosphere, and creative interpretation of the landscape.
We will photograph at a variety of extraordinary locations throughout Death Valley National Park during morning and afternoon field excursions, with emphasis on dunes, salt flats, badlands, alluvial fans, water-carved canyons, and the subtle abstract patterns that make Death Valley such a rewarding destination for creative photographers. Early March often brings ideal conditions: comfortable daytime temperatures, cool mornings and evenings, and dynamic weather that can range from crystalline blue skies to dramatic desert storms and luminous cloud formations. In years blessed with sufficient winter rainfall, the desert may even awaken with carpets of gold, pink, violet, and white wildflowers along the valley floor and mountain foothills.
The workshop includes eight guided photographic excursions in the field, classroom presentations, image reviews with constructive critique, and extensive hands-on instruction and constructive critique. Midday sessions will explore photographic seeing, composition, creativity, digital workflow, and refining personal vision, while group meals and informal gatherings create opportunities for deeper conversation, camaraderie, and individualized guidance.
To ensure a highly personalized experience, participation is limited to just ten photographers. This small-group format allows ample instructor access in both the field and classroom while preserving the relaxed, collegial atmosphere that defines Visionary Wild workshops.
Included accommodations are in elegant king-bed guest rooms at the historic Inn at Death Valley, with single- or double-occupancy (this is a great opportunity to bring along your non-photographer partner), complimentary Wi-Fi, and access to the resort’s exceptional amenities, including its spring-fed pool, spa facilities, gardens, and fine dining restaurant. All meals, snacks, and beverages during the workshop are included.
Combining extraordinary desert landscapes, luxurious accommodations, exceptional instruction, and the fellowship of a small group of passionate photographers, this promises to be a memorable and creatively inspiring experience. We hope you’ll join us.
Note: Visionary Wild, LLC operates this workshop under a permit issued by the National Park Service at Death Valley National Park.
We will meet at The Inn at Death Valley at 1:00 pm on Monday, March 1, 2027. Following introductions and an orientation session, we will depart for our first afternoon and sunset photographic excursion.
Each morning and evening throughout the workshop, we will photograph during the finest light of the day, departing before sunrise and returning after sunset. Between field sessions, in the Inn’s spacious Gold Rush Room, Jerry and Todd will present private lectures and demonstrations on photographic vision, composition, creativity, image processing, and maximizing the expressive potential of your photographs. Image review sessions with constructive critique will provide valuable feedback and individualized guidance before returning to the field for additional photography.
Friday morning, March 5, will include the final sunrise field session, followed by a concluding critique and discussion session before we adjourn at approximately 3:00 pm.
All prices are per person.
Package includes the workshop itself, four nights’ accommodations in Standard king rooms with Wi-Fi at the Inn at Death Valley (check-in March 1, check-out March 5), all meals, and beverages (including beer and/or fine wine with dinner). Prorated fees are available for participants who have arranged to share a room, and for those who do not require lodging (in the past, some participants have opted to bring their camper and park in the lot near the hotel).
Note: If you will be attending the workshop alone and require a hotel room, please book at the single occupancy rate. Double-occupancy bookings are for guests who already know each other, and who chose each other as roommates.
