Overview

Welcome to Prairie Spirit, a unique opportunity to explore and photograph the enduring character, quiet beauty, and poignant history of life on the northern Great Plains. Through the extraordinary photographic possibilities presented by isolated, abandoned farmhouses, weathered agricultural buildings, forgotten homesteads, and charming small towns of north-central North Dakota, we will explore themes of time, memory, resilience, and the changing relationship between people and the land. This workshop is designed to strengthen your photographic skills, challenge familiar habits, and encourage you to see beyond the obvious. Our emphasis will be less on making the technically perfect photograph than on approaching subjects with fresh eyes, shifting perspectives, experimenting with composition and light, and taking creative risks. The combination of working in an evocative environment and reconsidering how you respond to your subjects can transform your photography long after the workshop has ended.

Visionary Wild instructor Tillman Crane has arranged special permission to photograph an extraordinary collection of abandoned prairie homesteads and other slowly decaying structures on private property normally inaccessible to the public. Some of these places seem almost suspended in time, their former occupants having left behind family photographs, dishes in cupboards, antique furniture, and other intimate traces of lives once lived. From August 15–23, 2027, Tillman, with the assistance of a knowledgeable local collaborator, will lead this immersive photographic exploration across two distinct areas of north-central North Dakota, providing participants with exceptional freedom to pursue their individual creative interests.

This workshop begins on Sunday, August 15, at 4pm, after check-in from 3:00pm at the Cobblestone Inn in Bottineau, North Dakota, a small prairie community close to the geographical center of North America. For the first four nights, Bottineau will serve as our base for exploring a carefully scouted collection of at least 10-12 specially permitted photographic locations on private properties throughout the surrounding countryside. Rather than following a rigid schedule of group visits, participants will have three full days to photograph in the Bottineau area, with the flexibility to choose among our provided locations according to their interests, the prevailing light and weather, and the subjects they find most compelling. This freedom to work at an individual pace, return to particularly rewarding places, and devote sustained attention to developing a photographic idea is central to the workshop experience.

On Thursday, August 19, we will relocate northward to the Cobblestone Inn in Rugby, North Dakota, our base for the remaining four nights. Here, another specially scouted collection of privately owned properties, made accessible through advance permission, will offer fresh opportunities to photograph the distinctive architecture, artifacts, landscapes, and atmosphere of the northern prairie. This second base expands the range of subjects available to us while preserving the same flexible, photographer-centered approach. Participants will again be able to select locations according to their creative priorities, explore at their own pace, and revisit favorite subjects as conditions and inspiration suggest. The workshop concludes with hotel check-out on Monday, August 23, 2027.

Conditions at the various sites range from skeletal, windowless shells exposed to the elements to remarkably intact buildings still containing personal belongings of their long-departed occupants. Weathered wood, peeling wallpaper, rusted machinery, forgotten kitchenware and knickknacks, and the interplay of natural light with deteriorating interiors all offer compelling visual possibilities. Beyond the traditional genre of architectural photography, these structures and their surrounding landscapes provide an exceptionally rich environment for photographers interested in still life, abstraction, texture, pattern, landscape, documentary storytelling, and even portraiture. The vast skies, changing weather, and subtle beauty of the surrounding prairie will be subjects in their own right. One prior Prairie Spirit participant even served as her own model, dressing in character to create a beautiful series of ghostly images telling an ancestral story.

This is fundamentally a location-based workshop devoted to the creative practice of photography, with our precious time spent making pictures rather than sitting in a classroom. It will be up to participants whether they choose to seek out instruction, feedback, and assistance from the instructor and local guide. Those who wish to go out in the field with the instructors are welcome to do so. Those who are confident in their abilities and prefer to maximize their time creating new images are free to roam on their own. All camera formats, film and digital, are welcome, although there will be no facilities for processing film during the workshop. Participants who would like the instructor’s constructive critique of images made during the workshop, or of a pre-existing body of work, are welcome to arrange a time over the course of the week to meet with the instructor one-on-one.

Above all, Prairie Spirit is an invitation to slow down, look more deeply, and engage with places that reveal their stories gradually. With eight nights, two complementary base locations, and an unusually broad range of privately accessible photographic subjects, this workshop offers the rare luxury of time, freedom, and accessible creative attention. Our goal is not simply to return home with memorable photographs, but to develop a more personal, intuitive, and expressive way of seeing.
