Is your color processing a hit-and-miss guessing game that leaves you frustrated and wanting more? Have you simply never had the opportunity to learn best practices from a master of digital color management and processing?
To achieve the vision we capture while photographing, we have to process. Processing is an art unto itself, one that requires skill and vision, and is needed to bring forth what you saw in your mind’s eye the moment you pressed the shutter. Processing requires knowing more than where all the sliders are; it takes an understanding and awareness of what a photograph can become, how light and subject can be expressed to best communicate the elements of a photograph, and how to use processing tools to translate that vision through our screens and in print.
This is not your typical processing workshop that teaches you how to use a tool. It’s about learning the vision that will guide you to better processing decisions that will help solve the problems common to all photographs, and how to fine tune your photograph to elevate it to a finished work of art.
For many, processing is a frustrating experience, a barrier that keeps them from fully expressing, and fully enjoying their photographs. But it doesn’t have to be that way. For over two decades, Visionary Wild instructors and thousands of other photographers have relied on Rich Seiling’s expertise and aesthetic judgement to help them express their photos to the fullest.
Rich will focus on five fundamental processing challenges, and how to implement your vision with a straightforward and rational processing approach. Not only will it improve your processing, but also your photography as your awareness is raised in the field to photographic possibilities you’ve been missing, and as you are better able to craft photographs that will work with the process, leaving creative frustrations behind.
In the days before each session, participants will be invited to submit up to five RAW image files each (optional, not required), from which Rich will make a selection of several images that he considers most useful for demonstration purposes during that week’s session. Participant photographs that Rich processes during the workshop will be available to be returned to the owner as a final processed version with all of Rich’s adjustments intact.
We invite you to watch the following short video for an introduction to Rich Seiling, as he shares his background in photography and as a fine printmaker for the masters.
WORKSHOP SESSIONS
Sessions are on four consecutive Tuesdays, November 1 – 22, 2022, scheduled for 8-10pm (U.S. east coast time).
Nov 1 – GOOD COLOR, PART ONE – Exposure, RAW Processing, and Contrast
Every adjustment affects color. Rich will teach you how to build a solid foundation for your processing that solves problems without creating new ones.
Nov 8 – GOOD COLOR, PART TWO – Refining Your Vision and Color Correction
Learning to see the difference between “good” and “bad” color will make it easier to process your photos and get better results. Rich will show you how to evaluate and correct the most common problems.
Nov 15 – FINE TUNING WITH LOCAL CONTROLS
Global corrections can’t do everything. You need local corrections to achieve the fine tuning that turns a photo from good into great. Rich will show you how to decide between local and global corrections, and how to perform them.
Nov 22 – PRINTING AND COLOR MANAGEMENT
Achieving precise color control on screen and in print requires bringing hardware and software solutions together with a precise intention. Printing a photograph to look like the image displayed on your screen can be challenging. We’ll give you the tools to improve your results and create confidence in your process.
During this series, Rich will use both Adobe Lightroom Classic and Photoshop.
These sessions will take place online on the Zoom platform. Those who register will receive an email about 30 minutes before the each session starts with a link to join the Zoom session and a password.
