This 17-day adventure explores the wild heart of the Tian Shan mountains—an immense landscape of glacier-carved valleys, nomadic culture, and soaring peaks that rise above 20,000 feet. Highlights include remote alpine lakes, traditional yurt camps, encounters with Kyrgyz horse culture, and a private helicopter journey to the mountaineering basecamp on the South Engilchek Glacier beneath the spectacular summit of Khan Tengri.
With just eight participants, the expedition offers rare access to one of the most inspiring and little-visited mountain landscapes on Earth while learning directly alongside two of the most influential nature photographers of our time.
Few destinations on Earth are more spectacular than the Kyrgyz Republic (also known as Kyrgyzstan), where the great ranges of the Tian Shan rise in sweeping grandeur across Central Asia. These mountains soar higher and wilder than the Rockies, Sierra Nevada, Alps, or Andes. Peaks below 16,000 feet are scarcely considered worthy of a name. Along the Chinese border, the Kokshaal-Too range ascends to truly Himalayan scale, culminating in the world’s northernmost summits over 7,000 meters: Khan Tengri (“Lord of the Skies,” 23,000 ft) and Jengish Chokusu (also known as Victory Peak, 24,400 ft).
Beneath these immense peaks, between the elevations of 2,600 to 14,000 feet at which we will be traveling, lies a landscape of extraordinary beauty: glacier-carved valleys, wild rivers, forests of spruce and fir, and high alpine pastures bursting with summer wildflowers—purple, yellow, pink, orange, and white. Nomadic Kyrgyz herders graze horses, yaks, sheep, and goats across these high meadows during the short mountain summer, maintaining traditions that stretch back many centuries along the ancient Silk Road.
Despite its epic scenery and rich cultural heritage, Kyrgyzstan remains remarkably little visited. Increasingly recognized as one of the world’s most compelling adventure travel destinations, it retains a sense of authenticity and openness that has become hard to find around the globe. Since 2015, Visionary Wild has been exploring this remarkable country, refining an exceptional photography-focused itinerary that combines dramatic landscapes, rich cultural encounters, and a spirit of genuine exploration.
The 2028 expedition offers a particularly special opportunity: it will be co-led by world-renowned photographer, conservationist, and explorer Art Wolfe, alongside Visionary Wild founder Justin Black, who has led numerous expeditions across Kyrgyzstan over the past decade. Art Wolfe’s images—celebrated in more than 100 books and widely known through the acclaimed television series Travels to the Edge—have inspired generations of photographers to see the natural world with deeper creativity and curiosity. Traveling and photographing alongside him in one of the most visually spectacular mountain landscapes on Earth promises to be a rare and unforgettable experience.
Our journey begins in the lively and rather charming capital of Bishkek, where participants will gather for an introductory orientation and welcoming dinner before setting off the following morning into the mountains. Traveling in a small caravan of comfortable and and capable four-wheel-drive Toyota Sequoia vehicles, we venture deep into the heart of the Tian Shan—through remote valleys, across high alpine passes, and into landscapes where nomadic culture and wild nature still flourish.
Throughout the expedition we will focus on making the most of the finest photographic light each morning and evening. In addition to sweeping mountain panoramas, the journey offers a remarkable diversity of subjects: alpine lakes reflecting glacier-clad peaks, nomadic horse culture, eagle hunters, colorful bazaars, and alpine wildflowers. Wildlife frequently encountered along the way includes golden eagles, ibex, marmots, lammergeiers (bearded vultures with wingspans approaching ten feet), and the magnificent Marco Polo sheep—the largest bighorn sheep in the world. With extraordinary luck, we might even glimpse a snow leopard or Asiatic wolf.
The expedition culminates with one of the most dramatic experiences available anywhere in mountain travel: an expertly piloted private Mi-8MTV helicopter (a powerful and rugged mountain variant) flight to a mountaineering base camp on the South Engilchek Glacier beneath the towering summit pyramid of Khan Tengri. Here, surrounded by a panorama of glacier-draped peaks exceeding 19,000 feet, we will spend two nights photographing one of the most spectacular alpine environments on Earth.
With a small group of just eight participants, generous photographic guidance, and the combined leadership of Art Wolfe and Justin Black, this journey promises to be both creatively inspiring and deeply memorable—a rare opportunity to explore one of the world’s last great mountain landscapes with two photographers whose lives have been devoted to celebrating the beauty of the natural world.
July 4: ARRIVAL DAY
We expect that most participants will arrive in the morning on a Turkish Airways flight from Istanbul. You will be met at the airport and transferred to Solutel Hotel in central Bishkek. There, we have arranged early morning check-in so you can go straight to your room several hours ahead of normal check-in time. Meet your fellow photographers, relax in the hotel, or perhaps take a walk to explore downtown. That evening, our itinerary officially starts with a 4pm group meeting, followed by dinner at one of Bishkek’s finest restaurants.
Overnight: Solutel Hotel (D)
July 5: INTO THE MOUNTAINS
After an early breakfast, we drive via Kochkor valley up into the mountains and a landscape almost too perfect to be real: lake Song-Kul. Enjoy a home-cooked lunch in our yurt camp, photograph around the lake and up into the mountains, have dinner, and have a restful night under the Milky Way in our comfortable and traditional Kyrgyz yurts.
Overnight: Yurt camp (B,L,D)
July 6: DAY AT SONG-KUL
Sunrise and sunset photography at some of our favorite locations around the lake, plus photo sessions with a professional Kyrgyz eagle hunter and his trained Golden Eagles, champion Kyrgyz archers, and more.
Overnight: Yurt camp (B,L,D)
July 7: SILK ROAD ROUTE
After a morning photo session and breakfast, we descend from Song-Kul via the scenic canyons of Karatal-Zhapyryksky State Preserve toward the town of Baetov, located on a main Silk Road route. After a lunch prepared by our camp chef in shade beside a mountain stream, we continue through a badlands area and over a stunning high plateau to a yurt camp beside a mountain creek in a gorge with soaring rock walls. Closely is the ancient fortified stone caravanserai, Tash Rabat, that once sheltered Silk Road travelers on the ancient Torugart Pass trade route into China. The current structure dates from the 15th Century, but earlier remains suggest that a Buddhist monastery stood on the site for going back a millenium.
Overnight: Yurt camp (B,L,D)
July 8: TASH RABAT AND KÖL SUU VALLEY
After an early breakfast, we will explore and photograph Tash Rabat before driving via the lush green At-Bashy mountain range (reminiscent of Switzerland) to the escarpment of the Kokshaal-Too mountains and the turquoise alpine lake Köl Suu, located in a narrow gorge winding like a serpent between the high peaks. This evening we will enjoy the spectacular scenic photography of the mountains and Köl Suu River. Assuming the weather is clear, this is a great location for night sky photography of the Milky Way over the mountains.
Overnight: Yurt camp (B,L,D)
July 9: KÖL SUU LAKE
Up early to photograph pre-dawn light, and after breakfast we’ve organized an excursion by boat on the little visited turquoise lake Köl Suu, dramatically positioned in a deep glacier-carved gorge between peaks soaring to 16,000 feet. The relatively short approach from our camp to the lake can normally be traversed in our group vehicles, though in wet years, it may involve a combination of travel by specialized 4WD vehicles and a mile or so on horseback. We’ll be back in time for dinner, more sunset and twilight photography near camp.
Overnight: Yurt camp (B,L,D)
July 10: KOK SHAAL-TOO RANGE OF THE TIEN SHAN MOUNTAINS
Sunrise shoot, breakfast, and drive into a stunningly beautiful but little-visited valley beneath high peaks on the border between Kyrgyzstan and China. A modern mountain lodge provides an opportunity for recharging, laundry, a shower, and a sauna if you like.
Overnight: Lodge (B,L,D)
July 11: KOK SHAAL-TOO
Today, we make a special excursion to a spectacularly positioned pair of glacier-fed lakes beneath a breathtaking panorama of ice-draped high peaks of the Kok Shaal-Too range.
Overnight: Visionary Wild tent camp (B,L,D)
July 12: KOK SHAAL-TOO
Early morning and evening “magic hour” light on the peaks and reflections in the lakes, as well as an excursion to the glaciers.
Overnight: Visionary Wild tent camp (B,L,D)
July 13: NARYN
After sunrise photography and breakfast, we drive back out of the border region, stopping for tea with a local Kyrgyz herding family at lunchtime, and continuing on to the town of Naryn, the regional capital, for an opportunity to spend a night in a nice hotel, resupply and photograph the local Kyrgyz culture.
Overnight: Grand Khan Tengri Hotel (B,L,D)
July 14: EKI-NARYN TO ISSYK-KUL
After breakfast, our caravan traverses a beautiful overland route through the mountains south of Issyk-Kul (the second largest alpine lake in the world), following wild rivers through high pastures, or “jai-loh,” with alpine wildflowers in bloom, and waterfalls plunging in side canyons. The photography along the way and near camp is incredible. Our crew will set up our tented camp beside an idyllic river in the mountains, with ancient petroglyphs located right in camp, at about 11,000 ft (3,353 m).
Overnight: Visionary Wild Tent Camp (B,L,D)
July 15: ONWARD TO KARAKOL
After morning photography and breakfast, we will continue through grand mountain scenery over the high pass of Tosor, dropping down to a picnic lunch and our first views of the vast sapphire waters of lake Issyk-Kul. We then proceed to the town of Karakol and the charming and comfortable Green Yard Hotel (the best hotel in eastern Kyrgyzstan). Dinner will feature an assortment of traditional dishes from the Dungan ethnic minority, served in the home of a very friendly, hospitable, and knowledgeable Dungan family.
Overnight: Green Yard Hotel (B,L,D)
July 16: KARKYRA
We will have a leisurely start this morning, and will then drive north into the Karkyra Valley, to our camp along the pristine Turuk River on the border with Kazakhstan. If time permits, we will make an excursion into the beautiful Turuk River canyon in the afternoon. Accommodations tonight will be the nicest yurts you’ve ever seen, complete with adjoining en suite bathrooms.
Overnight: Ak –Sai Karkyra Basecamp Luxury Yurts (B,L,D)
July 17: LORD OF THE SKIES: KHAN TENGRI BASE CAMP
After breakfast we head to the helipad for our jaw-droppingly spectacular forty-minute flight to Khan Tengri Base Camp on South Engilcheck Glacier at 13,000 ft (3,960 m), aboard a spacious Mi-8 MTV (mountain variant) transport helicopter, piloted by a highly experienced flight crew who fly this route regularly. The flight is a superb opportunity to do aerial photography of the high peaks, glaciers, and valleys, through the helicopter’s open porthole windows. Beneath the 23,000-foot peak of Khan Tengri, and 24,406-foot Jengish Chokusu (also known as Pik Pobeda – Victory Peak – the highest peak in the entire Tien Shan mountain system), we will be positioned in a virtually Himalayan setting, with outrageous photographic potential. Nighttime photography with star trails over the mountains is one of many opportunities here. Our accommodations will be in large tents with comfortable mattresses in this very international mountaineering base camp. Expect to meet climbers from around the globe, seeking to climb the high peaks.
Overnight: Tents at base camp (B,L,D)
July 18: KHAN TENGRI BASE CAMP
This morning, we will make the most of early light on Khan Tengri and the surrounding mountains, and then explore the glacier via trails on the rocky medial moraine (no special gear or experience required). After scouting the ice conditions, we are generally able to safely lead the group on an optional walk on the adjacent Zvezdochka Glacier, with dramatic 360-degree views of the high peaks. We will hope for the late alpenglow on Khan Tengri that can turn the marble summit pyramid a deep orange-pink.
Overnight: Tents at base camp (B,L,D)
July 19: BACK TO BISHKEK
Sunrise photography of the mountains and glaciers from basecamp will be followed by a morning helicopter flight back to Karkyra. From there, we will have time for a shower before loading into our vehicles to drive to the north shore of Lake Issyl-Kul, for lunch and a fascinating cultural experience. We will then return to Bishkek, check into our hotel, and enjoy dinner at one of our favorite restaurants.
Overnight: Solutel Hotel (B,L,D)
July 20: DAY IN BISHKEK
After breakfast, we will make an excursion to one of the city’s popular bazaars. These markets feature everything from spices, to produce and fresh flowers, to dried fruit and nuts, traditional breads and pastries, traditional Kyrgyz clothing, rugs, housewares, and more. The photographic potential here is phenomenal. We will also make a short visit to the Tumar Group, makers of high quality Kyrgyz-designed handicrafts – both traditional and modern – including felt carpets, blankets, hats, slippers, handbags, toys, pottery, and more. After lunch, we will continue our tour through the city center, followed by some down time and a celebratory final dinner at one of Bishkek’s best restaurants.
Overnight: Solutel Hotel. (B,L,D)
July 21: DEPARTURE DAY
We all say “Jakshe bargyla” (goodbye) and go our separate ways until our next adventure. Airport transfer provided. (B)
