Please contact us before booking to discuss whether this expedition is a good fit for you, as it involves hiking at high elevation and on rugged terrain, with up to 2,000 feet of elevation gain in a single day. Participants must be reasonably fit and have prior experience of successful acclimatization to elevations over 12,000 feet.
Timed to coincide with moonrise over Mount Everest, the spectacular rhododendron bloom, and the generally fine weather of spring, this trip is twenty-two years in the making. Back in 1999, at the age of twenty-five, I had the good fortune to go to work for one of my greatest photographic idols, Galen Rowell. Over the next three years, until the untimely deaths of Galen and his wife Barbara in the crash of a chartered plane near Bishop, California, Galen became my mentor, and a dear friend. In 1998, Galen had completed a trek through the Everest region of Nepal – the Khumbu Himal – where he photographed what he told me was the “greatest natural light show of my life.” Galen’s stories of his adventures in the Everest and Annapurna regions of the Nepal Himalaya, and the resulting photographs of course, have haunted and inspired me ever since. In fact, the header image above is Galen’s famous photograph, Moon over Everest, Lhotse and Makalu at sunset from Gokyo Ri (17,520 ft.), Khumbu Himal (Nepal, 1998) and the first five images in the gallery that accompany this page are Galen’s as well (all used under license). The first two are the view of Everest from Gokyo Ri at sunset and just after; the third is Ama Dablam from Tengboche on our trekking route; the fourth is sunset light on the sacred peak Machapuchare in the Annapurna region; and the fifth is the “Spectre of the Brocken,” Galen’s shadow surrounded by a rainbow glory cast on fog over the Ngozumpa Glacier, with Everest and Lhotse in the background.
My primary goal as I designed the Everest portion of this expedition was to make the most of our time in the most photogenic locations in the region:
• Trekking toward Everest through the Dudh Kosi River Valley (supported by two porters per guest to carry your gear), from Lukla to Monjo to Namche Bazaar to Tashinga to Pangboche, in the shadow of Ama Dablam (22,349ft), one of the world’s most beautiful mountains.
• The sacred turquoise lakes of Gokyo, the world’s highest lake system (approx. 15,500ft.), which we reach by private helicopter from Pangboche. Trekking trails provide access to the various lakes and vistas of the high peaks, including Cho Oyu (26,864ft.) the world’s sixth highest peak, and Everest.
• The rocky summit of Gokyo Ri (17,575ft.), a relatively short but strenuous hike above our lodge at Gokyo Lake, offers the single most spectacular view of Everest (29,032ft.), Lhotse (27,940ft.), and Makalu (27,825ft.), three of the five highest peaks on Earth, as well as Cholatse (21,129ft.), of which Galen made the first ascent in 1982. We will have two opportunities to hike up Gokyo Ri for moonrise and the warm light of afternoon through sunset on the high peaks, to account for the possibility of cloud one evening.
• On the helicopter flight back to Lukla from Gokyo, we land and hop out to photograph at Kala Patthar, the highest point on the Everest Base Camp trek route (18,500ft.) overlooking the camp, just two kilometers away. This offers a classic view over the Khumbu Glacier of the Khumbu Icefall and the summit pyramid of Mount Everest above.
Acclimatization is essential on an expedition into these high elevations, which is why before heading into the Khumbu we take a hike through the rhododendron forest on Phulchowki, a high “hill” topping out at over 9,000 feet, overlooking the Kathmandu valley with the Himalaya in the background. That night, we return to sleep at 4,500 feet in Kathmandu. Acclimatization continues the next morning after we fly to Lukla (9,350ft.), the starting point for the Everest trek, settling into our lodge and relaxing or exploring the village. The next morning we set out on our trek, for another five nights in the Dudh Kosi Valley. Though the trekking trail will vary from moderate to strenuous at times, distances each day will be rather short, we won’t be in a rush, and we will make plenty of stops to rest and photograph along the way. Following our trek, we will be picked up by helicopter to fly over to Gokyo Lakes for three nights, well acclimatized for our hike(s) up to the panoramic Everest vista from Gokyo Ri.
After flying back down to the oxygen-rich elevations of Kathmandu, we carry on to Nepal’s second city, Pokhara, positioned beneath the incredible Annapurna Massif. Galen first visited this area in 1977, and returned in the 80s and 90s, making some of his most famous mountain portraits in the process. Our excellent lodge outside Pokhara is positioned at 3,690 feet on a ridge with spectacular views of the sacred peak Machapuchare (22,943ft.), catching gorgeous sunset light. We will also make excursions to photograph the local culture of the Pokhara area, including Phewa Lake, home to a sacred temple and hundreds of colorful boats. Our accommodations throughout the trip are best available, including five-star Dwarika’s Hotel in Kathmandu, a living museum that has become a savior of antique Newari crafts and architecture. On the Everest trek, and at Gokyo, accommodations are simpler trekking lodges, as you might imagine, but still quite comfortable and hospitable. Near Pokhara, the first-rate Tiger Mountain Lodge offers spectacularly situated with and provides easy access to excellent photographic opportunities. After you’ve had a chance to digest the information that follows, please let me know if I can answer any questions for you. I look forward to sharing this grand adventure with you!

Day 2 – April 5th, Tue In Kathmandu
Today after breakfast, we will visit to Kathmandu Durbar Square.
Kathmandu, the largest city of Nepal, is the political as well as the cultural capital of the country. Like any big city, Kathmandu has seen rapid expansion in the last decade, but despite the hustle and bustle so typical of metropolitan areas, its people remain as refreshingly friendly as ever. Retaining its ancient traditions, Kathmandu is blessed by a Living Goddess and is enriched by endless ceremonial processions and events that take to the streets every now and then with throngs of devotees seeking blessings. These religious festivals are steeped in legend and are quite a spectacle with chariot processions and masked dancers often possessed by the spirits of deities.
The Temple of the Living Goddess: The Kumari Devi is the most important of several living goddesses in Nepal. She is seen on the temple’s balcony regularly.
We visit the vegetable & spice market in Ason and see its many courtyards and bustling bazaars.
We will spend the rest of the day visiting Boudhnath Stupa, and exploring the Thamel district for some last-minute shopping prior visiting the Everest region.
Overnight at Dwarika’s Hotel, Kathmandu [B/L/D]
Day 3 – April 6th, Wed In Kathmandu – Hike to Phulchowki
Today after early breakfast, we will drive to Godawari (approx. 90 mins) for acclimatization hike up Phulchowki.
Hike Duration: 5 hours round trip
Hike Grade – Moderate
Note on hike durations / distances: Times listed for each day’s trekking are conservative, based on an expectation of an average level of fitness, and taking into account our group’s likely degree of acclimatization to the elevation. They assume several stops along the way to photograph or rest. The local sherpas routinely hike these distances in half the time listed.
Phulchowki, “Peak of Flowers,” is the highest peak on the rim of Kathmandu valley, reaching just over 9,000ft. elevation. This vantage point provides a panoramic full view of the combination of the Kathmandu valley and the beautiful Himalayan range.
The Phulchowki jungle is dense and as the name suggests famous for its abundance of wild roses, yellow jasmine, iris, and other native flowers. Different shades of rhododendrons grow wild, and a variety of colorful orchids highlight the dense jungle. Phulchowki is also famous for a variety of birds and butterflies, and provides an ideal introduction to the birds of Nepal.
A small shrine dedicated to Goddess Phulchowki Mai, the guardian of the forest, marks the top of the peak.
Transfer to Swotha Café, Patan for lunch, then visit Patan Durbar Square in Lalitpur.
Patan is a paradise of fine arts and one of the three cities in the Kathmandu Valley. Located 5 miles southeast from Kathmandu city, Patan is best known for its rich cultural heritage. It is home to the valley’s finest craftsmen who have preserved such ancient techniques as the repoussé and lost wax process used to produce exquisite sculptures. The city retains much of its old charm with its narrow streets, brick houses and myriad Hindu temples, Buddhist monasteries (vihars) and monuments. The predominant sound in Patan is that of the tinkering of craftsmen bent over the statuettes they are shaping. As in Kathmandu, Hinduism and Buddhism have co-existed here for ages, influencing each other, and the religious harmony is exemplary.
