If there is one place on Earth that represents the high Arctic in microcosm, it’s the Svalbard Archipelago. Wildlife is abundant here, featuring a large population of polar bears, as well as arctic foxes, reindeer, walrus colonies, whales, dolphins, seals, and numerous bird species. The landscape is characterized by rugged mountain ranges, stunning fjords, vast glaciers, icebergs, and towering cliffs that provide a home for busy colonies of Kittiwakes and Guillemots. The beautiful serenity of the Arctic pack ice begins at the Archipelago’s northern end, where polar bears roam the ocean in search of seals. In the ice with the sun arcing low along the horizon, it becomes abundantly clear that you are truly on top of the world.
Designed for photographers by photographers, this extended itinerary provides quality time to work unrushed in the best locations, unlike most Svalbard trips which tend to be only a week long and follow rushed tick-list itineraries that bypass prime locations. We will take you to the places we love, making the most of this great spectacle of Arctic wildlife, ice, landscape, and light.
Leaders Frans Lanting and Christine Eckstrom will provide generous and effective expert photographic instruction to the small group of just ten guests.
We are pleased to announce a major upgrade to this trip: the private-charter expedition vessel M/V Vestland Explorer, a much more luxurious, spacious and modern vessel than Noorderlicht, the ship that had been lined up for our 2021 itinerary. This Ice-Class 1A polar yacht was built in 1994 to perform oceanographic research in Greenland. At 46.5 meters long and 10.5 meters wide, the Explorer is designed for easy navigation through icy seas. She received a full renovation in 2021.
A spacious panoramic lounge, a gym room, sauna, and two hot tubs are all available for you to relax in after a landing or zodiac cruise. Visit the captain on the open bridge where a second panoramic lounge opens out to an outdoor lounge-bar area. Explorer’s spacious cabins and suites range from 118 to 215 square feet, all with en-suite bathrooms, and proper beds rather than bunks (single twin, double twin, or double bed configurations are available), and the suites are equipped with picture windows for greater observation.
Explorer makes an excellent platform for photography, with her spacious main deck low over the water compared to the big ships, creating excellent vantage points if we are approached by polar bears on the ice, or walruses in the water. Well-suited to expedition cruising among small islands, she can get into locations that larger ships cannot access. Her zodiacs facilitate landings and wildlife photography opportunities in otherwise inaccessible areas. As masters of the vessel, Frans and Chris will coordinate with the highly qualified captain and crew do everything possible to maximize photographic opportunities and to deliver the best possible experience.
Our group will be limited to 10 guests plus the two leaders, supported by an expert crew and expedition staff. Meals aboard Explorer are prepared by a talented chef with fresh ingredients. We are assembling an excellent wine list for the trip as well!
